2013 in Review
Over the years our annual look back on the year has grown a great deal. Initially, it was a simple way to cap off a year of showing. Then it emerged as a way for us to recognize and celebrate the great achievements of all of our Fwaggle owners, co-owners and friends. More recently, it has come to represent a memory book for us -- a treasure trove of some of our best moments in dogs. Over the past decade, our involvement in dogs has been steadily winding down and this year we saw big personal changes that hurried that process along even further. Jobs, relocations and life often get in the way of our hobbies, and such was the case in 2013. As a result, we are down to a record 4 Toy Manchesters in residence at Fwaggle and, while we hope to welcome a few visitors over the coming years, we don't expect that number to grow substantially. It is a difficult transition to make after 30 years with, literally, a houseful of dogs, so exercises like this take on larger significance as does the support of our friends and co-owners, who allow us to remain involved. Make no mistake, we intend to continue to breed for the next few years, but there is no question it will be under different, more collaborative circumstances.
So, what else happened in 2013? Lots!!! The year brought us some wonderful blessings, including several new champions, some great results at the US National, a number of placements among the top Toy Manchesters in North America, and some adorable baby black and tans. For the first time ever, our number of new titlists in performance events equaled our number of new conformation titlists, proving that the Manchester plan for world domination is coming together!
We were proud to see our dogs earn more than 85 group placements across North America, including 20 Group wins in Canada and the US on several different dogs. At the US National, we were thrilled to watch Karen Cornell pilot Am Ch Fwaggles Faux Fur to Winners Bitch for our co-owner, Tammi Myers (Medley Manchesters) and then see Chloe (Am GCh Fwaggles Pret A Porter) and Finesse (Am/Can Ch Fwaggles She's Son Fine) take Best of Varieties at the two associated all-breed shows, shown by Christina Caridis and Amanda, respectively. Not to be outdone, little Alice (Am Ch Rustic Lane Resident Evil at Fwaggle) snuck in at the end of the year with an exciting Select Bitch and Best Bred-By in Variety win, piloted by her co-breeder/co-owner Carolyn Horowitz. And we can't forget Harley (BIS, DKW '13, NW'13 NO/DK/Rom/Am GCh Rustic Lane Road Warrior at Fwaggle), who has been visiting Kirsti and Eirik Kahrs in Norway this year, earning titles in several countries and Breed and Best Opposite wins in a number of large entries. Of course, his breeder and our co-owner on Harley, Carolyn Horowitz, is justifiably busting with pride and we couldn't be happier for all involved.
And the year isn't complete until the numbers are in for Top Dog races. Harley topped the list as #1 ETt in Norway while closer to home we were happy to see our two new, young dogs Finesse and Frankie (Can Ch Fwaggles Million Dollar Baby) place #2 and #3 in Canada while (as of end of November) three of our dogs made the Top 10 in the US, including Stella (Am Ch Fwaggles Avant Garde), who was #3 All Breed/#10 Breed; Chloe, who was #5 Breed; and, Finesse, who after only two weekends out in the US managed #6 All-Systems! Perhaps just as exciting was playing the role of proud Grandma's though, as it appears that the National Winner, Eukanuba Winner and seven of the Top 10 dogs in the US had a Fwaggle parent. That realization does come with a sobering wake-up call, however, and we hope our fellow breeders will be cognizant as we move into 2014 of the importance of safeguarding (or creating) diversity in our gene pool, particularly among sires.

Harley had another busy year, beginning with a trip to Norway where he has quickly earned a number of lovely wins in large entries as well as siring several litters. Here in North America, three puppies from his first and only litter born here (co-bred with Carolyn Horowitz out of Fwaggles Original Sin) earned their titles this year. We are looking forward to Harley's return home in 2014, which should include a quick visit to Canada!

Frankie continued to be a wonderful ambassador for the breed, making all of us very proud. After a successful puppy career in 2012, Frankie's first year out as a special was a success. His wins this year included 15 Group 1sts, dozens of group placements and a number of new performance titles. we are looking forward to watching him continue to mature over the coming years.
Am Ch Fwaggles Avant Garde
Breeders: W&A Kelly, D Young and J Henderson Owners: Dr Roger Travis, W&A Kelly
Stella had a great start this year, piloted by her best friend, Marcelo Chagas. Showing is not her favourite activity, however, so she is taking a little time to find herself (and maybe even a few babies!) |

Chloe spent most of the year training for agility with Christina Caridis, making only a few appearances in the show ring. Lucky for us Christina brought her to the National, however, as she looked fantastic and had a great weekend! We are very much looking forward to Chloe's planned visit to Canada in 2014!

What to say about Fluffy? Well, her name cracks us up every time we say it, so if nothing else she always succeeds in making people smile. She owes much of her success to the careful and patient training of Karen Cornell, who very graciously hosted Fluffy for her most impressionable months. Tammi's love for Fluffy's mother and her aunt prompted her to remind us of her request for a puppy made many years ago and, voila, the rest is history. We are looking forward to watching Fluffy develop and are particularly happy that Tammi plans to do some performance training with her as well (now, if she can just remember her age while filling in entry forms, we'll be all set...)!

As always, we are totally baffled by performance titles, but we do know one thing -- we are so incredibly proud of all that Cindy has done with Pixie and consider ourselves lucky she agreed to take her! Pixie is a fantastic ambassador for the breed, always proving that brains and beauty can come in one package (with a little elbow grease from Mom!)
